NaPoWriMo – Day 22

NaPoWriMo – Day 22

The day 22 prompt was to write a poem in honour of Earth Day. This could be about my own garden, a national park, or anything from a maple tree to a humpback whale.  I decided to write about the Yorkshire Moors, which are close to where I live, and touch on some of the things that it makes me very sad to say happen in this beautiful place.  I have been inspired by one of the League Against Cruel Sports’ current campaigns, an organisation of which I am a proud member.  Please read up on the issues if you have time.  There is no justification for cruelty.

The Yorkshire Moors

A purple carpet as far as the eye can see
A howling wind that cuts through
Flat caps and sheep’s’ wool
A home to a thousand animals
The beauty of the moors

This land that has been claimed by humans
To do with what they will
A home to a thousand animals
To be shot by paying customers
And only paying customers

Every 20 seconds an animal is caught in a snare
They didn’t pay for the privilege of hunting on the moors
They are pests
And must be controlled
Because humans own this land

Apparently humans have the right
To claim land as their own
Apparently humans have the right
To decide who lives and who dies

This planet belongs to the humans
And look at what they’ve done to it

Maybe we can fix it
Maybe we can’t
But one thing’s for sure
We have to try
