NaPoWriMo – Day 19

NaPoWriMo – Day 19

The day 19 prompt was based around “didactic” poetry which used to be very common.  This type of poetry explicitly sought to instruct the reader in some kind of skill or knowledge, whether moral, philosophical, or practical. The prompt was to write the latter kind of “how to” poem – a didactic poem that focuses on a practical skill. Also, the “practical” skill could be somewhat mythological, imaginary, or funny, like “How to Capture a Mermaid” or “How to Get Your Teenager to Take Out the Garbage When He Is Supposed To”.  I really struggled to come up with an idea for this one, until I thought of a question that I’m asked very often by other ladies (and some gents) who wear vintage style make up.  How do you apply your winged eyeliner?

How to Apply Winged Eyeliner

Take the bottle of liquid black
Carefully remove the applicator
Remove it
Oh it’s stuck
Give it a yank

Use cotton wood pad to remove
Eyeliner splatter from over cheeks
Realise you put the brush down
On your white towel

Towel disposed of as laundry
Pick up applicator
Close one eye and hold lid taut with free hand
Rest both elbows on dressing table
Stab yourself in centre of eye
Leaving a paint splotch on lid

Eyelid cleaned
Carefully apply perfectly shaped winged line
Leave eye closed while it dries

Why is the other eye completely different?

Even up using cotton buds
Leave sooty smudges all over lids

Throw liquid black in bin
Remove all make up from lids

Take the kohl pencil
And a teaspoon from the kitchen drawer
Using spoon as stencil
Apply perfectly shaped lines to each eye

Not very black that is it?

Take mascara and apply to each eye

Why is there a huge gap between lash and line?

Throw kohl pencil in bin
Remove all make up from lids

Take the jar of gel
And the brush
Stick tongue out

Side of the mouth, not the front
On the opposite side to the eye you’re doing

Apply perfectly shaped cat flicks to each eye

Perfectly shaped
You missed a bit
Put some more on
Even it up
Now the other side’s off
Bit more
And there
In the gap
There you go

Why do I look like a panda?
