NaPoWriMo – Day 15

Standard
NaPoWriMo – Day 15

The day 15 prompt inspired by it being the halfway point in the 30 challenge.  The prompt was to write a poem that incorporates the idea of doubles. I could incorporate doubling into the form, for example, by writing a poem in couplets. Or I could make doubles the theme of the poem, by writing, for example, about mirrors or twins, or simply things that come in pairs. Or I could double my doublings by incorporating things-that-come-in-twos into both your subject and form.  The prompt made me think of one of my old poems Big Issue?.  I decided to write another poem using this echoey technique.  Today I have been thinking about animal rights a lot, having signed a petition against the promotion of the use of real fur in the media and reading about animals being caught in snares.  So I wrote a poem about one of the animal rights issues closest to my heart.  Hunting.  May we one day live in a world without cruelty.

The Hunt

In the English countryside
A fox trots along
In the peace and quiet
Of nature

The horses run
Loud and fast
The horn of death rings out
The dogs chase
The fox is terrified

Who are you to call him a pest?
Who are you to cry vermin?
Who are you to wear his skin?
Who are you to take this life?

Foxes need to be controlled
May you be controlled

We, the people
Who have destroyed the greenery

Who are we to call anyone a pest?

Who are we?
Who are we to take a life?

In an African national park
A lion yawns sleepily
In the heat and quiet
Of nature

The jeep slows down
Slowly, quietly
The shot rings out
The landscape silent
The lion is dead

Who are you to call him yours?
Who are you to say it’s your right?
Who are you to hang his head upon your wall?
Who are you to take his life?

To kill old and infirm animals is kind
May you live to be old and infirm

We, the people
Who have decimated the savannah

Who are we to claim rights over anything?

Who are we?
Who are we to take a life?
