The Hottest Day Ever

Standard
When he was five
Ice cream ran down his innocent fingers
Sticky and attractive to bees
The stings made him angry at the world
It was the hottest day ever

When he was ten
He kicked the ball a little too hard
Shards of the neighbour’s window
Were still being found months later
It was the hottest day ever

When he was fifteen
In a stolen car she said no
But he knew she just got off on it
The struggle, the fight
It was the hottest day ever

When he was twenty-five
Stood in the dock he denied all
Everything. No robbery, no drugs
He’d beaten no-one
It was the hottest day ever

When he was thirty-two
She left him for the last time
Screaming she could take no more
On his knees begging, he would change
It was the hottest day ever

When he was forty-six
His body gave up the long hard fight
Abuse had finally done him in
Now forever tormented by fire and brimstone
Every day, the hottest day ever
